Amoxicillin 500mg as a Bacteriostatic Antibiotic

September 6, 2015

What are antibiotics? Antibiotic is a class of pharmacological drugs that is used to stop bacterial growth. Antibiotics could either be bactericidal or bacteriostatic. Bactericidal means it kills the bacteria that is producing the infection. On the other hand, when we say bacteriostatic, it stops the growth of the microorganisms thus preventing the progress of infection.

Amoxicillin 500mg is an example of a bacteriostatic antibiotic. It does not kill the bacteria, instead it stops the growth of bacteria by altering their protein synthesis. Amoxicillin 500mg is used to treat respiratory infections, nose infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. There is no standard amoxicillin dosage for everyone. Basically, it will depend on the age and weight of the patient.

However, for adults, Amoxicillin 500mg is usually taken three times a day for seven to ten days. For the very young and elderly, amoxicillin dosage is based on their body mass. This is to prevent toxicity especially in the geriatric population where renal and liver problems are common. Amoxicillin 500mg is metabolized primarily by our liver and excreted out of our body by our kidneys. For this reason, it is very important to check liver and renal function to avoid toxicity.

As mentioned earlier, Amoxicillin 500mg is also used as an antibiotic for UTI. We have plenty of antibiotics for UTI and this drug is commonly used. However, Amoxicillin 500mg as an antibiotic for UTI is used for uncomplicated cases. This is not a treatment for sexually transmitted diseases or STDs.

One of the most common misconception about antibiotics is using it as a treatment for viral infections. Antibiotics like Amoxicillin 500mg are used for bacterial infections. Usually, for viral infections, a supportive treatment is done. This means that treatment will be based on the presenting signs and symptoms of the patient. If the patient has fever, then he or she will be given antipyretics. If the patient complains of muscle pains, then a muscle relaxant will be given. We also have Anti-viral drugs but this does not cure the viral infection. It just shorten the course of the disease. This anti-viral drug should also be given 24 hours after the symptoms arise to make it effective.

Finishing the entire course of treatment with Amoxicillin 500mg is very important. Even if you are already feeling better and the symptoms of infection is gone, do not discontinue taking your amoxicillin dosage until the last day. This is to prevent mutation and resistance of the bacteria.

Side effects with is uncommon. However, if you experience severe side effects like difficulty in breathing, severe rashes, diarrhea; stop the medication right away and seek medical attention immediately. This could be life threatening.

Consult your doctor first before starting your antibiotic treatment. Never underestimate the importance of giving your doctor a visit before taking in anything. This may sound very simple but a lot are self- medicating themselves which could be dangerous in the long run.
